William The Conqueror
No medieval king of England is more famous than William the Conqueror, and no event in the whole of English history has been more discussed than the Norman Conquest. From birth until death, William lead a life destined for glory. Being a strong leader and soldier, William the bastard soon became known as William, Duke of Normandy, and later as William I, King of England. Born in Falaise, France, William was the illegitimate son of Robert I, duke of Normandy, and Arletta, a tanners daughter, and he is therefore sometimes referred to as William the Bastard.# Upon the death of his father, the Norman nobles, honoring their promise to Robert, accepted William as his successor. Rebellion against the young duke broke out almost immediately, however, and his position did not become secure until 1047 when, with the aid of Henry I, king of France, he won a decisive victory over a rebel force near Caen.# This would set the course for the rest of his life. creation. [Burke's Peerage]
------------------------------------
On Leicester, Earldom Of [Burke's Peerage, p. 1671]:
Robert de Beaumont, a companion in arms Of William I (The Conqueror) at
Hastings was granted after the Conquest much land in the Midlands Of
England, but most Of it was in Warwickshire rat er than Leicestershire.
Indeed his younger brother became Earl Of Warwick. Robert also held
territory in Normandy and is usually referred to as Count Of Meulan. He
was a leading political figure in the reigns Of William II and Henry I
and on the death Of one Ives de Grandmesnil in the First Crusade, the
funds for campaigning in which Ives had raised from Robert on the
security o f his estates, [Robert] came into full possession Of them,
including a sizeab le part Of Leicester. The rest Of the town was granted
him by Henry I and it is possible that he became Earl Of Leicester.

Earldom Of Pembroke: Those who were created Earls Of Pembroke before the
rise Of the Herberts from the 15th century on were predominantly close
relatives Of the reigning mocharch. This was not so in the first and
historically most important case, however, Gilbert Fitz Gilbert or de
Clare was made Earl Of Pembroke in 1138 by King Stephen, his elder
brother Richard Fitz Gilbert or de Clare being father Of the
Alice/Adelaide who married William de Percy. In the period of unrest and
indecisive civil war known as t he Anarchy, when followers of Stephen,
Henry I's nephew, struggled with the E mpress Maud, Henry I's daughter,
Gilbert Earl Of Pembroke sided with each one . He already held Chepstow,
on the Welsh-English borders. In 1144 he pushed far into South Wales and
established himself at Carmarthen. [Burke's Peerag e]
