Douglas (Gaelic: dubh glas, "dark water") family prominent in the
history Of Scotland. Dating from the 12th ce ntury, the family came
originally from Douglasdale in Lanarkshire. It had two main branches: the
Black Douglases, headed by the Earls Of Douglas, and the Red Douglases,
headed by the Earls Of Angus.
The Black Line:
Sir James Doug las, called the Black Douglas, assisted King Robert
Bruce in the great victor y over the English at the Battle Of Bannockburn
(1314). Awarded numerous esta tes for his service to the king, he was
later killed on a Crusade to the Holy Land. His nephew, William Douglas
(circa 1327-84), inherited his lands and b ecame 1st Earl Of Douglas in
1358 during the reign Of King David II. He estab lished the great Black
Douglas line.
James Douglas, 2nd Earl Of Douglas and Mar, lost his life fighting
the English at the Battle Of Otterburn, or Chevy Chase (1388). While
dying, he instructed his soldiers to raise the standard a nd to keep his
death secret until the battle was won. With his death the Earl dom passed
to Archibald the Grim, 3rd Earl Of Douglas (circa 1328-1400), whos e power
overshadowed that Of the Scottish king. His son Archibald, the 4th Ea rl
(1372-1424), was killed fighting the English in France during the Hundred
Years' War. The Black Douglas line came to an end when William, 8th Earl
Of Douglas (1425?-52), was stabbed to death by King James II at Stirling.
Willi am's brother, James, 9th Earl Of Douglas (1426-88), was deprived Of
his estat es and fled to England in 1455.
The Red Line:
George Douglas (circa 1380-1403 ), the illegitimate son Of William,
1st Earl Of Douglas, married Mary, the da ughter Of King Robert III (circa
1337-1406), became Earl Of Angus, and establ ished the Red Douglas line.
The most famous member Of that line was perhaps A rchibald, 6th Earl Of
Angus (1489-1557), who married Margaret Tudor, widow Of King James IV Of
Scotland and sister Of Henry VIII Of England. Their grandso n was Lord
Darnley, the second husband Of Mary, Queen Of Scots. William Dougl as
(1589-1660), the 11th Earl, was created Marquess Of Douglas in 1633. His
great-grandson, Archibald Douglas (1694-1761), became Duke Of Douglas in
170 3, but the Dukedom died with him. Ultimately, the titles Marquess Of
Douglas and Earl Of Angus passed to the Dukes Of Hamilton and the Douglas
estates to the Earls Of Hume. Later members Of the Douglas family were
John Sholto Dougl as, 8th Marquess Of Queensbury, originator Of the modern
rules Of boxing, and Sir Alec Douglas-Hume, British prime
minister.[dkapell.ged]

Alias:<ALIA> Earl OF /CARRICK/
[darlacooper.ged] and [MyTree.GED ]
Changed his name from John to Robert on ascending to the throne. Reigned but too injured by kick from a horse to rule. Weir says died at Dundonald Castle, Ayrshire. b. c. 1337 d. April 4, 1406, Rothesay, Bute, Scotland. Also called (UNTIL 1390) 'John STEWART, Earl OF CARRICK'. Coin: Robert III, 14th century in the British Museum. King Of Scots from 1390, after having ruled Scotland in the name Of his father, Robert II, from 1384 to 1388. Physically disabled by a kick from a horse, he was never the real ruler of Scotland during the years of his kingship. As the eldest son of Robert the Steward (the future Robert II) and Elizabeth Mure, he was legitimated by their marriage several years after his birth. In 1362-63 he joined his father in a futile revolt against King David II, who both imprisoned him and created him Earl Of Carrick in 1368. (He had been created Earl Of Atholl in 1367.) Robert II became King in 1371; in 1384, because Of his advanced age, he turned over the government to Carrick. After his injury in 1388, however, Carrick was supplanted by his brother Robert, Earl Of Fife. On his accession, probably on April 19, 1390, he changed his name to Robert (III) from John, to avoid reminding others of John de Balliol, King Of Scotland from 1292 to 1296, who was not favourably remembered. Fife, created Duke Of Albany in 1398, continued to govern throughout this reign, except for three years (1399-1402) when Robert III's eldest son, David, Duke Of Rothesay, took his place. The dissolute Rothesay died in March 1402 while imprisoned in Albany's castle Of Falkland, Fife. Perhaps in an attempt to save his remaining son, James (afterward James I, King Of Scots) , from death at Albany's hands, Robert III sent the boy to France, but James was captured by English sailors, a shock to the aging king.

John Stewart, Lord Of Kyle, known as Earl Of Carrick, the son Of Robert II by Elizabeth Muer, succeeded to the throne as Robert III. King (1390-1406). Created Earl Of Atholl in 1367 and Earl Of Carrick in 1368. He was never capable Of governing personally be cause of disabilities from an accident; this forced him to delegate power Of administration to his ambitious younger brother, Robert Stewart, 1st Duke Of Albany. He also gave guardianship of his elder son, David Stewart (1378-1402) , Duke Of Rothesay, to his brother, who presumably starved him to death at Falkland. He succumbed to grief on receipt Of news Of the capture by the English Of his younger son, James, who was enroute to France.[somerville.ged]
Reigned from 1390 to 1406: Son of Robert II, King Robert III was considered illegitimate by the Church due to the too close consanguinity Of his parents (though a Papal dispensation had been granted). Robert III was described as 'feeble', 'timid' and 'unfit to rule'. He had been crippled as a result of a riding accident two years before he came to the throne. He had been baptised as 'John' but, in view Of the potential confusion with John Balliol and the untimely fates of kings Of that name in England and France, he was crowned as Robert III. He had a reputation for kindliness and justice (despite attendance in 1396 at the Battle Of the Clans between clans Chattan and Kay on the North Inch, Perth). But his personal qualities and failing health undermined his authority and power was transferred to his brother, the Duke Of Albany and his eldest son, the Duke Of Rothsay. However, Albany imprisoned the Duke Of Rothsay in Falkland Palace where he died Of starvation in 1402. The King then sent his younger son, James, to France in 1406 but after he had been captured by pirates off Fla.
