General Notes (Husband)

[2541990.ged]

REF: Sharon Kay Penman, "Falls the Shadow": Allied with Simon de Montfort; as long as Montfort lived Edward could not spare the time & men to conquer Wales. November 1264, the Marchers Roger de Mortimer & Roger de Clifford rebelled again. Again Llywelyn ap Gruffydd allied with Montfort & the rebels surrendered at Worcester Dec 12 1264. Simon compelled Prince Edward to yield to him the Earldom of Chester; for the first time in 30 years Chester & Wales were again allied, as they had been between Simon's kinsmen Ranulph de Blundeville & John le Scot with Llywelyn's grandfather Llywelyn Fawr. In June 1265, Simon goes to Pipton, Powys to ask for help from Llywelyn ap Gruffydd. In exchange for his aid, Simon agreed on behalf of the English gov't to recognize Llywelyn's title as Prince of Wales & to ceed back all land taken from Llywelyn's uncle Dafydd ap Llywelyn Fawr. Llywelyn agrees to furnish Simon 5000 troops & monies but will not fight for Simon within England (only within Wales). At this time, they agree to marry Simon's daughter Eleanor to Llywelyn. Before the Battle of Evesham (4 Aug 1265) King Henry III agreed under duress from Simon (he was held captive by Simon & travelling with Montfort's army as a consequence) to sign the treaty with Llywelyn. At Evesham, the several thousand Welsh troops loaned Simon by Llywelyn fled the battle ere it began but were methodically run down & slaughtered in the surrounding countryside by Roger de Mortimer & his forces. After the battle, Llywelyn extended his alliance to Simon's surviving sons & honored refuge in Wales to them & Eleanor Plantagenet his widow & Eleanor de Montfort, his (to be) plight trothed. After Evesham, Llywelyn had to cancel the plight troth to Eleanor de Montfort, Simon's daughter, as she was no longer very "marketable" but his symathies extended to the 14 year old. On Whitsunday Eve, May 1266, Llywelyn scored a major defeat of Roger de Mortimer, who ended up fleeing the field, much tarnishing his already nearly non-existent honor. On 29 Sep 1267 Llywelyn signs Treaty of Montgomery with Henry III yielding to Llywelyn all the lands he had taken by conquest & acknowledging him the Prince of Wales. Edward & Roger de Mortimer forfeited their Welsh lands. Llywelyn was to restore his brother Dafydd to the lands he had before his defection four years previously. Llywelyn was to pay 25,000 marks. (Henry was desperate for money, & this is why he probably agreed to the treaty).
REF: "The Reckoning" Sharon Kay Penman: His brother Dafydd took to plotting with Owain de la Pole & his father the Prince of Powys for Llywelyn's murder. After Llywelyn found out, Dafydd fled to Edward's court again where Edward intended to use him as the fatal arrow against Llywelyn. After Llywelyn married Eleanor de Montfort in Paris by proxy against Edward's wishes, she was taken by pirates hired by Edward on her Channel crossing from France to Wales. At the same time, Edward, with Dafydd at his court & Eleanor de Montfort in comfortable custody at Windsor Castle, declared Llywelyn a rebel and declared war on him on 12 Nov 1276.

From same, quoting the Welsh chronicle Bronhinedd Y Saesson re: Llywelyn's death & the aftermath of it upon the Welsh people: "And then all Wales was cast to the ground".

Medical Information: Brown eyes, dark complected, uncommonly tall.
